  1. Step 1

    Enter Iḥrām

    Station · Mīqāt

Bathe (ghusl), wear the two white sheets (men) or modest dress (women), make niyyah at the mīqāt, and begin the talbiyah.

    • Perform ghusl or wuḍūʾ; men wear the two unstitched sheets.
    • Pray two rakʿah (nafl of iḥrām) if not a disliked time.
    • Make niyyah aloud: for ʿUmrah say ‘Labbayk Allāhumma ʿumratan’.
    • Begin the talbiyah and continue reciting it often until you start ṭawāf.

    Recommended duʿāʾ

Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am — You have no partner — here I am. Truly all praise, favour and dominion are Yours. You have no partner.

  2. Step 2

    Ṭawāf of the Kaʿbah

    Station · Al-Masjid al-Ḥarām

Circle the Kaʿbah seven times anti-clockwise beginning at the Black Stone; men do idṭibāʿ and raml in the first three rounds.

    • Stop the talbiyah on entering the Ḥaram; keep wuḍūʾ.
    • Uncover the right shoulder (men) — idṭibāʿ — until ṭawāf ends.
    • Face the Black Stone, say ‘Bismillāh, Allāhu akbar’, and begin.
    • Complete seven circuits; jog the first three (raml) if possible for men.
    • Between the Yemeni corner and Black Stone recite: ‘Rabbanā ātinā fī’d-dunyā ḥasanah…’.
    • After ṭawāf, pray two rakʿah behind Maqām Ibrāhīm, then drink Zamzam.

    Recommended duʿāʾ

Rabbanā ātinā fī’d-dunyā ḥasanah wa fī’l-ākhirati ḥasanah wa qinā ʿadhāba’n-nār.

Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

  3. Step 3

    Saʿī between Ṣafā and Marwah

    Station · Al-Masʿā

Walk seven trips between Ṣafā and Marwah, remembering Hājar's search for water for Ismāʿīl.

    • Go to Ṣafā and recite ‘Inna aṣ-Ṣafā wa al-Marwata min shaʿāʾiri’Llāh’.
    • Face the Kaʿbah, raise your hands, glorify and supplicate; repeat three times.
    • Walk toward Marwah; jog between the green markers (men).
    • Repeat the dhikr and duʿāʾ at Marwah — that is one trip.
    • Complete seven trips ending at Marwah.

    Recommended duʿāʾ

Allāhu akbar (×3). Lā ilāha illa’Llāh waḥdahu lā sharīka lah, lahu’l-mulk wa lahu’l-ḥamd yuḥyī wa yumīt wa huwa ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīr.

Allah is greatest (×3). None has the right to be worshipped except Allah alone, He has no partner; His is the kingdom and His is the praise; He gives life and death and He is over all things capable.

  4. Step 4

    Ḥalq or Taqṣīr

    Station · Marwah / camp

Men shave the head (ḥalq — preferred) or trim (taqṣīr); women trim a fingertip's length from a lock of hair. ʿUmrah is now complete.

    • Men: shave completely (afḍal) or shorten evenly.
    • Women: gather the hair and clip roughly a fingertip's length.
    • Iḥrām ends — its restrictions are lifted.

Note — If combining with Ḥajj (Tamattuʿ), you now leave iḥrām until 8 Dhul-Ḥijjah when you re-enter for Ḥajj.

Note

This guide follows the Tamattuʿ form of Ḥajj (most common for pilgrims coming from outside the mīqāt). Rulings on ṣaḥīḥ conditions, badal fees, and exceptions vary between madhāhib — consult a qualified scholar and your Ḥajj group's guide. Cross-reference with Fiqh comparison and Ask a scholar.
