Kalimah 1 · The Word of Purity

Kalimah Ṭayyibah

الْكَلِمَةُ الطَّيِّبَةُ · کلمہ طیبہ

لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ

Lā ilāha illa-llāh, Muḥammadun rasūlu-llāh

English

There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah; Muḥammad ﷺ is the Messenger of Allah.

Urdu

اللہ کے سوا کوئی معبود نہیں، محمد ﷺ اللہ کے رسول ہیں۔

Virtue · The declaration by which a person enters Islam — the foundation of tawḥīd and the greatest of all remembrances.

Kalimah 2 · The Word of Testimony

Kalimah Shahādah

كَلِمَةُ الشَّهَادَةِ · کلمہ شہادت

أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ

Ashhadu an lā ilāha illa-llāh waḥdahū lā sharīka lah, wa ashhadu anna Muḥammadan ʿabduhū wa rasūluh

English

I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, alone, without partner; and I bear witness that Muḥammad is His servant and messenger.

Urdu

میں گواہی دیتا ہوں کہ اللہ کے سوا کوئی معبود نہیں، وہ اکیلا ہے، اس کا کوئی شریک نہیں، اور میں گواہی دیتا ہوں کہ محمد ﷺ اس کے بندے اور رسول ہیں۔

Virtue · Recited in the tashahhud of every ṣalāh and when accepting Islam. The Prophet ﷺ said: whoever says this sincerely, Allah forbids the Fire upon him.

Kalimah 3 · The Word of Glorification

Kalimah Tamjīd

كَلِمَةُ التَّمْجِيدِ · کلمہ تمجید

سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ وَلَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ الْعَلِيِّ الْعَظِيمِ

Subḥāna-llāhi wa-l-ḥamdu li-llāhi wa lā ilāha illa-llāhu wa-llāhu akbar, wa lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā bi-llāhi al-ʿaliyyi al-ʿaẓīm

English

Glory be to Allah, all praise is for Allah, there is no deity except Allah, and Allah is the Greatest — and there is no power and no strength except with Allah, the Most High, the Most Great.

Urdu

پاک ہے اللہ، اور سب تعریف اللہ کے لیے ہے، اور اللہ کے سوا کوئی معبود نہیں، اور اللہ سب سے بڑا ہے، اور کوئی طاقت و قوت نہیں مگر اللہ کی، جو بلند اور عظیم ہے۔

Virtue · The Prophet ﷺ called these the *bāqiyāt al-ṣāliḥāt* — the enduring good deeds mentioned in Sūrat al-Kahf (18:46).

Kalimah 4 · The Word of Oneness

Kalimah Tawḥīd

كَلِمَةُ التَّوْحِيدِ · کلمہ توحید

لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ يُحْيِي وَيُمِيتُ وَهُوَ حَيٌّ لَا يَمُوتُ أَبَدًا أَبَدًا، ذُو الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ، بِيَدِهِ الْخَيْرُ، وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

Lā ilāha illa-llāhu waḥdahū lā sharīka lah, lahu-l-mulku wa lahu-l-ḥamdu yuḥyī wa yumītu wa huwa ḥayyun lā yamūtu abadan abadā, dhu-l-jalāli wa-l-ikrām, bi-yadihi-l-khayr, wa huwa ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīr

English

There is no deity except Allah, alone, without partner. His is the dominion and His is all praise. He gives life and causes death, and He is Living and shall never die. Owner of Majesty and Honour; in His hand is all good, and He is over all things capable.

Urdu

اللہ کے سوا کوئی معبود نہیں، وہ اکیلا ہے، اس کا کوئی شریک نہیں، اسی کی بادشاہت ہے اور اسی کی تعریف ہے، وہ زندہ کرتا اور مارتا ہے، اور وہ ہمیشہ زندہ رہنے والا ہے جسے کبھی موت نہیں آئے گی، بزرگی و بزرگواری والا ہے، اسی کے ہاتھ میں ہر بھلائی ہے، اور وہ ہر چیز پر قادر ہے۔

Kalimah 5 · The Word of Seeking Forgiveness

Kalimah Istighfār

كَلِمَةُ الِاسْتِغْفَارِ · کلمہ استغفار

أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ رَبِّي مِنْ كُلِّ ذَنْبٍ أَذْنَبْتُهُ عَمَدًا أَوْ خَطَأً سِرًّا أَوْ عَلَانِيَةً، وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنَ الذَّنْبِ الَّذِي أَعْلَمُ وَمِنَ الذَّنْبِ الَّذِي لَا أَعْلَمُ، إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ عَلَّامُ الْغُيُوبِ وَسَتَّارُ الْعُيُوبِ وَغَفَّارُ الذُّنُوبِ، وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ الْعَلِيِّ الْعَظِيمِ

Astaghfiru-llāha rabbī min kulli dhanbin adhnabtuhū ʿamadan aw khaṭaʾan sirran aw ʿalāniyah, wa atūbu ilayhi mina-dh-dhanbi-lladhī aʿlamu wa mina-dh-dhanbi-lladhī lā aʿlam, innaka anta ʿallāmu-l-ghuyūbi wa sattāru-l-ʿuyūbi wa ghaffāru-dh-dhunūb, wa lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā bi-llāhi al-ʿaliyyi al-ʿaẓīm

English

I seek forgiveness from Allah my Lord for every sin I have committed knowingly or unknowingly, secretly or openly, and I repent to Him for the sin I know of and for the sin I know not. Indeed You are the Knower of the unseen, the Concealer of faults, and the Forgiver of sins — and there is no power and no strength except with Allah, the Most High, the Most Great.

Urdu

میں اللہ اپنے رب سے ہر اس گناہ کی معافی مانگتا ہوں جو میں نے جان بوجھ کر یا انجانے میں، پوشیدہ یا ظاہر کیا، اور میں اس گناہ سے بھی توبہ کرتا ہوں جسے میں جانتا ہوں اور جسے نہیں جانتا۔ بے شک تُو غیب جاننے والا، عیب چھپانے والا اور گناہوں کا بخشنے والا ہے، اور کوئی طاقت و قوت نہیں مگر اللہ کی جو بلند اور عظیم ہے۔

Kalimah 6 · The Word of Rejecting Disbelief

Kalimah Radd-e-Kufr

كَلِمَةُ رَدِّ الْكُفْرِ · کلمہ رد کفر

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ أَنْ أُشْرِكَ بِكَ شَيْئًا وَأَنَا أَعْلَمُ بِهِ، وَأَسْتَغْفِرُكَ لِمَا لَا أَعْلَمُ بِهِ، تُبْتُ عَنْهُ، وَتَبَرَّأْتُ مِنَ الْكُفْرِ وَالشِّرْكِ وَالْكِذْبِ وَالْغِيبَةِ وَالْبِدْعَةِ وَالنَّمِيمَةِ وَالْفَوَاحِشِ وَالْبُهْتَانِ وَالْمَعَاصِي كُلِّهَا، وَأَسْلَمْتُ وَأَقُولُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ

Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika min an ushrika bika shayʾan wa anā aʿlamu bih, wa astaghfiruka li-mā lā aʿlamu bih, tubtu ʿanhu, wa tabarraʾtu mina-l-kufri wa-sh-shirki wa-l-kidhbi wa-l-ghībati wa-l-bidʿati wa-n-namīmati wa-l-fawāḥishi wa-l-buhtāni wa-l-maʿāṣī kullihā, wa aslamtu wa aqūlu lā ilāha illa-llāh, Muḥammadun rasūlu-llāh

English

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from knowingly associating anything with You, and I seek Your forgiveness for what I do not know of. I turn back to You from it and I disown disbelief, polytheism, lying, backbiting, innovation, tale-bearing, indecencies, false accusations, and every sin. I submit to You and I say: there is no deity except Allah, Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allah.

Urdu

اے اللہ! میں تیری پناہ چاہتا ہوں اس سے کہ میں جانتے بوجھتے تیرے ساتھ کسی کو شریک ٹھہراؤں، اور جو میں نہیں جانتا اس کی تجھ سے معافی مانگتا ہوں، اس سے توبہ کرتا ہوں، اور میں کفر، شرک، جھوٹ، غیبت، بدعت، چغلی، بے حیائی، بہتان اور تمام گناہوں سے بیزار ہوں، میں اسلام قبول کرتا ہوں اور کہتا ہوں: اللہ کے سوا کوئی معبود نہیں، محمد ﷺ اللہ کے رسول ہیں۔

Virtue · A comprehensive disavowal of shirk and sins — often taught alongside the shahādah for renewing one's faith.
